Because no one is born in emptiness, I believe life
follows habitat. Therefore I feel it is very important
to make architecture harmonious and mutually advantageous
for both the building and the culture of the town it
belongs in. If that town's culture is unsatisfying,
then architecture should be used to incite change. All
revolutions, in order to become revolutionary, must
have meeting spots for their provoking members and their
unassuming counterparties. When designing a building
you must decide what it is for and what it can be made
for once its prior function is exhausted.
It is for this reason that I feel architecture is very
humanistic. Both romantic while knowing it can never
be loved, (its purpose can be sacrificed at any time
for human desires) yet heroic, almost to an extent where
it highlights the tragedy of heroism, knowing that in
order for there to be heroes there must be unsettling
circumstances (confident, proud, a beautiful building
in a marsh of ugliness). In summation, I feel architecture
should both command and conform, to complement and act
as an example of life. |
