Architecture is art that expresses one's ideas or beliefs
about space. It affects all aspects of our lives because
it is all around us from our homes to our churches.
It is also something that affects us emotionally, whether
it be opening up a new business or rebuilding a ruined
home. My inspiration is everyday life - when I walk
down the block or if Iʼm in a car and I look over at
the skyline. It is just so amazing to me how ideas go
form being on paper to model to the real thing. The
process is incredible. I love seeing how architecture
is so different around the world. The designs adapt
to the culture and it is so interesting to see the change
between various states and countries.
The utopian housing project was a project where we
had to design a temporary housing unit for refugees,
which would be easy for them to put up and to bring
down. This project was hard for me because I wasn't
sure how I would make a livable space that would be
easy to put up and bring down. I came up with the collapsible
spiral design after making several failed models of
another idea that lead me to this one. It would be put
up by the push a button and would be able to come down
by pull of a string. The materials that would be used
are nylon fabric for the outside and some type of thin
flexible metal for the inside frame. The opening at
the top would be covered by a clear plastic so that
natural light comes in. My housing unit would also come
with a lamp and swing, the swing being a sort of community
space for the family.
Students reflect on what they’ve learned, review films, critique
architecture, and interview artists.
