Class Galleries
  About the Class

Cutting edge. Innovative. Wildly imaginative. The world of contemporary art in our time seems to know no limits as it challenges conventional ideas about art. This class investigated concepts and issues in contemporary art through experimentation with different materials and artistic methods. Students in this class visited galleries, met with practicing artists in their studios, experienced site-specific artwork, and discussed relevant topics with MoMA curators and staff. Throughout the summer the students explored how contemporary artists address issues of Place, Consumerism and Identity—from a Public Art Fund guided walk and a trip to P.S. 1 to conversations with street artists, gallery artists, and young emerging artists. The class participated in studio activities incorporating various media, from drawing, collage, and basic printmaking to conceptual pieces with found materials. Through the final project students created a large-scale self-directed project incorporating all they had learned throughout the summer, becoming active participants in the contemporary art world.
