What do collector toys, kitchen utensils, fancy
fabrics, igloos made of trashcans, bendable bikes,
printed posters, and plastic chairs have in common?
The answer: innovative design. Students in this
summer's design class examined the many ways design
impacts our daily lives. Beginning with 3D design,
students created containers for various objects
while learning from designers at KidRobot and
Smart Design. Working alongside staff from MoMA's
Graphic Design Department, through a series of
design activities, students collaborated on the
poster design for In the Making. Finally, they
explored the ways in which design can be used
to positively impact society by imagining their
own design solutions to youth challenges. Drawing
from conversations with MoMA curators as well
as graphic and conceptual designers, students
created a series of imaginative studio projects
that demonstrated their growing understanding
of the world of design that surrounds us all.
