  About the Class

Participants in From Scene to Screen explored contemporary film and video with an emphasis on narrative and experimental filmmaking. Studying a wide range of classic and contemporary films—from The Great Train Robbery (1903) to The Breakfast Club (1985)—the students become active and critical viewers, engaging in class discussions and homework assignments designed to deepen their understanding of film and video as a unique art form. Visits to Soundtrack Studios, The American Museum of the Moving Image, Silver Cup Studios and discussions with MoMA curators, actors, editors, and directors provided students with a glimpse into the complex world of film and video production, study, and critique. In addition, students explored the production side of filmmaking— writing, directing, and editing a piece to contribute to a class video. In addition to producing their own pieces, students also served as crew members, actors, and critics on each other's films, reinforcing the idea of film as a collaborative art.
