My first experience with art came as somewhat of a
mistake. I was one of those kids that was never good
at much. When I was supposed to be getting into junior
high school, my parents told me to try out for Media
because it sounded easy and neutral. Thus I took black
and white photography, a talent by default if you will.
My inspirations include people and the world around
me. I'm a junkie for portraiture and will often take
pictures of people on the street who I do not know.
I enjoyed this class because it taught me the depth
and techniciality of printmaking. It exposed for me
the complexity of street art and how much work and cunning
it took. I learned to keep an eye out for different
types of art in the city, and I began to be more informed
about the processes involved in what we see everyday.
I especially enjoyed when we visited Swoon and her studio,
her wheat pasting was very elaborate and took enormous
skill and effort. I found the stencil project very enlightening
because it was something I had always wanted to do,
but I never had the skill or the courage. Printmaking
revealed itself to me as an art form that stands varying
and questionable but is undeniably a part of everyday
life.
Students reflect on what they’ve learned, review films, critique
architecture, and interview artists.
