My name is Tshering. My heritage is Tibetan but I am
from Darjeeling a little town in India. My grandparents
had to leave Tibet when there was a Chinese attack so
till now I have never been to Tibet since China owns
Tibet now. I came to New York for better education and
a better future. I came here with my sister 3 years
ago. I go to Millennium High school and I am going to
become a junior. I had a lot of fun at MOMA during the
classes, I feel lucky that I got to go and have such
great experiences. I thought everyone from my classmates
to the security guards at MOMA were great. I experienced
hardship when I was cutting the lino-blocks; I think
most of the people thought it was hard to cut the lino
blocks. Some people cut themselves while trying hard
to get it the way they wanted it to look. We needed
letters to make our Xerox transfers since we were all
assigned words that we picked from a hat. We had to
write one of the words that we picked from a hat in
the Xerox transfer collage that we made. We all worked
with Citra solve and it was painfully smelly, some people
while working were complaining of the smell but some
people liked the smell, me personally I hated it too
because it was really strong. We created 20 copies of
the collage that was under Xerox transfer 10 were normal
and all of the prints had to look the same with same
word and color. The other 10 were experimental ones;
we could play with it more and they could look different.
I had so much fun with it getting all messy with the
ink on my hand, which inspired me to try out printing
with my hands. I put prints on my hand and fingerprints
on my collage. And just splashing ink on the print without
caring much of how it will come out, just experimenting
and then looking at the result at the end. My whole
inspirations were the works of art that we viewed in
the gallery at MOMA. I liked trying what some of the
artists did but not copying it exactly just taking a
few of his or her techniques and mixing it with another
artist's idea or technique. My other inspiration is
my art teacher she said I should take this class and
it will improve my artistic skills and will be good
for my college resume.
Students reflect on what they’ve learned, review films, critique
architecture, and interview artists.
