I wanted to use my sketch model of a family restaurant as an example
of my work. To me, the model is a direct representation of my work in the architectural program. There were several steps that went into the design and development of this work. Originally I based my design on an abstract painting by Robert Mothwell. From the sketch I took of the painting I created a detailed floor plan of a restaurant. The floor plan was the basis of the entire model. I used its blueprints as a reference during construction of the three dimensional model. As I started construction, I could not help but feel a sense of success and achievement. When I saw the walls go up, I knew how it would inevitably look and how it correctly related to the floor plan. Building the actual model was the most rewarding part for me because I got a chance to use my creative and constructive abilities.
This model was intended to be a basic sketch model but I worked harder on the project by putting in more details to create a better finished product. As I began to work on the model I became more involved in things I could add or do. While following my floor plan in the construction of the project, I noticed myself revising my plans to make it more efficient and practical. For example, I removed several walls in the entrance to make the space more open and accessible. Towards the end of the model construction I worked on interior details to give it a finished look. This included; a scale bar, seating, wooden floors and paint. This was also applied
to the exterior where I painted the walls, added a detailed arch in the entrance way and included landscaping details. This model is an example of my abilities in the field of architecture. It demonstrates that I can take a piece of art and transform it into a practical, functioning design. This work is a direct result of how I can successfully link art and architecture. |
