Art just is. I really had no opinion about art when I came into this program, and I still don’t, and that’s okay. This program has taught me something else about art, though. Not those cheesy things they say like "art is everywhere" or that it is "life" and "passion" etc. Of course this is true for a select few but what I really learned is that art is work.
In In the Making, I was in the class called Design in Action. We visited
a lot of design studios and it is there that I learned most of my lessons concerning art and design this summer. One of the most influential things I learned was the design process. I used to see items just as items. Using them only for their function the actual visual design was just an incentive for me to purchase or like the item. I learned that every object has a well thought out plan and idea that someone is trying to convey.
When I realized how hard it was to actually get something produced,
it became impossible not to appreciate and even love all of the material things that surround me in a non-superficial way. Art and especially design permeates all of our lives and whether it is "beautiful" or "ugly," it brings an improvement and advancement in the world. |
