Participants in From Scene to Screen explored contemporary film and video with an emphasis on narrative and experimental filmmaking. Studying a wide range of classic and contemporary films, the students become active and critical viewers, engaging in class discussions and homework assignments designed to deepen their understanding of film and video as a unique art form. Visits to Soundtrack Studios, The American Museum of the Moving Image, Silver Cup Studios and discussions with MoMA curators Raj Roy and Anne Morra, and Maria, Full of Grace director Josh Marston and actress Catalina Sandino, provided students with a glimpse into the complex world of film and video production, study, and critique. Building on these experiences, students explored the production side of filmmaking—writing, directing, and editing a piece to contribute to a class video. These short films reflect the creativity and imagination of the next generation of contemporary filmmakers. Watch a video of class exercises
