The Museum of Modern Art's Youth Advisory
Council (YAC), a group of New York City
high school students, collaborated with
MoMA and Acoustiguide to develop the Red
Studio podcast for teens. YAC members develop
educational materials and programs for teen
audiences to make the Museum more accessible
and fun.
The students recorded content ranging from
spoken word to interviews with Museum visitors
and staff. They then wrote and edited scripts,
and selected sound effects and music.

Anna
Hi I’m Anna and I’m sixteen years old. I have really enjoyed researching and recording my podcast. It has been so great to meet other New York City students and to come together through our appreciation for art. I’m really looking forward to starting our spring project together because we are going to have a chance to work together and come up with our own ideas. Along with art, I also enjoy dancing—especially jazz and hip-hop—and hanging out with my friends. |

Daniel
I’m Daniel and I go to high school in the Bronx. I’m seventeen years old and that means I can drive! Woo hoo! Each summer I’m a lifeguard at a summer camp. I don’t really like school but I love the MoMA program because there are so many amazing people there. My partner and I worked hard on this podcast so I hope you enjoy it! |

 |
Eric
I live in Queens and I love sports—especially basketball and baseball. My career interest is in sports management and I’d like to be the next general manager for the Dallas Mavericks or the New York Yankees. I have almost every NBA and MLB Xbox videogame. I have a passion for art and when I’m bored or have a sketch in my mind, I pull out my sketchpad and start drawing. I think art can be used to express how you feel and communicate. A work of art can tell a lot about someone. As an art student, I’m used to being around paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Art is something we can’t escape—electronics, food, clothes, and just about everything can be considered a work of art. Have you ever stopped to think about it? |

Harley A.
Hi! I’m Harley. I’m seventeen years old and I am a senior at a high school on the Upper East Side. Growing up with my mom, a printmaker, and my dad, a creative designer, has really exposed me to seeing art and design differently. I’ve been really grateful to be a part of YAC because I have learned so much about different artists and using different media. By making podcasts that visitors from around the world will hear, I feel like I’m a part of something much bigger than our little community. This is unlike any job I thought I could have as a high school student. On the side I like to knit because it’s cold outside. Really cold. |

 |
Harley K.
I’m Harley and I am a junior. I love drawing, painting, and doing other types of art. After high school I hope I can make a difference in the world. In college, I want to study environmental science and increase my knowledge about our changing planet. I want my life to have a purpose, and by helping to conserve the planet I can work for a better future. |

Ingrid
My name is Ingrid. My father named me after the actress Ingrid Bergman because he wanted me to have a unique name that I could live up to. My parents immigrated to New York City from Bogotá, Colombia, in the late 1980s, and I’m the first person in my family to be born in the United States. This city has made me into the female that I am today. I am a passionate advocate for anarchism, feminism, and activism and plan to travel all around the world. I thank MoMA for giving me the space to learn and grow. I was never exposed to art until MoMA and because of that, the Museum will always have a special place in my heart.

John
My name is John. I’m a New York City high school student and I also attend classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Ever since I was young I knew I wanted to be an artist. Throughout my educational career my mentors have always helped me to achieve my goals and my interest in fashion and art history. In my spare time I enjoy sketching and reading up on artists that have inspired others. |

Kim
Hey guys! I’m Kim and I’m a junior in high school. I came to the United States when I was in the fourth grade and I’ve been adjusting to the new environment ever since. School here is very different but I love the variety of extracurricular activities here. This year I’ve been part of the Cross Country team, Latin Club, Children’s Charity Club, the design manager for the school play, and manager of the wrestling team. The reason I joined YAC is because I love art and I want to learn more about it. So far, I’ve learned many things, for example compromising (I’m tough meat!). Finally, the last thing you should know about me is that food will cheer me up any day!

Richard
My parents immigrated to America and I was born and raised in Flushing, New York. Even through they lived in poverty and only had enough to eat and to wear, they taught my sister and me to appreciate everything they gave us and I am thankful for what they gave me. I’m also glad that I have the opportunity to be in YAC this year. In my podcast you’ll hear a lot of debate because art isn’t always about the facts. It’s about people’s different perceptions and points of view.

Tashonna
Hi, my name is Tashonna. I was born on the small island of Jamaica and raised in Brooklyn. I’m a "nature child"—I love nature and all the beauty it holds. Art is part of my heart. Whether paintings or landscapes, it lights up my life. I’m an environmentalist and humanitarian and one day I would love to join the Peace Corps to help alleviate as much hatred in the world as possible. Parties, movies, shopping, playing my violin, swimming, and writing are what I do best. Meeting new people and seeing new things make the days worth living.

Tomasz
Hi my name is Tomasz. I'm sixteen years old and I live in New York City. Initially I had no idea YAC would involve producing a podcast. I was really excited. I couldn't believe I was actually going to be able to make something that any visitor could listen to. After all, it was as close as I would ever get to being in the Museum's "collection." We spent a few weeks trying to find paintings that caught our attention, but one day I noticed the view of the atrium and I was amazed by how cool everything looked. The design was sharp and captivating. The sense of seeing the Museum function had its effect on me. So after a rollercoaster of a ride, we've finally brought to you our podcast on the Museum’s architecture. Enjoy it!

Yiqing
My name is Yiqing and I’m currently a junior in high school. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and browsing the Internet, but sometimes I just like having time to myself, away from all the work, pressure, and worrying. It’s relaxing to sit in the sun and read a novel, sketch, or write letters to my old friends. I enjoy hanging out at a bookstore with a friend, sipping coffee, and giggling with each other over something funny we’ve just read. I like to go to movies, play tennis, take pictures, play around with digital photo manipulation, study psychology, and create little movies in my head. One reason I enjoy looking at art is because it allows me to see the concoctions of others' minds. |

Alexandra
My name is Alexandra. I live in Brooklyn.
My current obsession is the color pink.
To me art is an opportunity to explore
the world around me and translate it
into something that represents a part
of me.
I have an interest in museums because
they give me a chance to see how other
people view different aspects of their
world. And I love how a piece of art
can evoke many emotions all at one
time. Museums are also fantastic because
they are a great inspiration for my
own artwork.
What I like about my podcast is that
even though it presents two conflicting
views of Jasper Johns’s Flag,
it still allows people to interpret
the work in their own way.
|

 |
Evin
I live in Brooklyn. I’m very
interested in Business and Engineering.
I also have a deep interest in art.
I find that art opens people's eyes
to a new world. When you really start
to pay attention to art you start
to see things you have never seen
before. You can feel the artist’s
effort and patience through his or
her work. Museums are a great place
to visit. I live in the big city of
New York and I can see all types of
art that opens my eyes to different
views on life. Through these works
I feel as if I grow mentally and physically,
making me a stronger person.
My group members and I put a lot
of work into this podcast. We collaborated,
even though sometimes we viewed things
differently.

Ivanna
My name is Ivanna and I am in the eleventh
grade. The first program I ever took
at MoMA was a drawing class, and I fell
in love with art. Now I am interested
in photography and take every opportunity
to take photography classes, since my
school only offered digital photography.
I am really grateful for the Internship
that I did in MoMA's Photography Department
because it helped me realize my love
for the medium.
Museums offer programs for teens who
are interested in art, museum studies,
or just feel like exploring something
new. Museums allow me to grasp every
aspect of art, and allow me to establish
what kind interested me most. Since
there are so many museums in the city,
why not take the opportunity to experience
the things that they offer?
People should listen to our podcast
because it will give them insight into
how the younger generation feels about
art. Artists were once young, and had
their own perspective on art, and so
do we. |

Jacky
Born in China but raised in New York
City, I have grown accustomed to diversity
and a multicultural lifestyle. I have
a passion to pursue a career as an engineer.
In my free time—if I ever have
any—I spend most of my time playing
basketball and handball.
Art is a gateway to imagination and
creativity. I think the most appealing
aspect of art is that it is boundless
and it has no rules. Art has the ability
to bring together people from different
parts of the world. It allows us to
connect with other cultures.
Our podcast is informational and
humorous. It evokes different ideas
and perspectives. It gives visitors
a VIP tour of the artworks.

Janelle
My name is Janelle and I am from Brooklyn.
One of my favorite hobbies is dancing.
I have taken many styles including ballet,
hip-hop, African, modern, and jazz.
I hope to become a choreographer in
the future.
Art is something where your interpretation
cannot be wrong. The possibilities
are endless.
People should listen to our podcast
because we have all worked extremely
hard on it, and it is funny and informative.
Our podcast is for teens, by teens.
Everyone learns something new every
day, and by listening to our podcast,
people will learn and form their own
opinions based on the information
we have given them.

Jessica
My name is Jessica and I’m a high
school senior. The funniest thing I’ve
done recently is stick a “$100
inside” sticker on an orange at
the local fruit stand. I encourage people
to write poems and stick them in public
places for public enjoyment. I wish
we lived in a world where spontaneous
dance numbers were the norm.
When you visit a museum, you will
be with people who, although they
may be interested in the same art
that you are, will have immensely
different opinions of them. Being
in a museum allows you to see the
world in a different way and also
to impart your views on others.
Everyone can and should listen to
our podcast because we worked really
hard on it. Plus, it's made by teens,
so it's not overly didactic or boring.
You’ll be able to learn all
the behind-the-scenes secrets of art
and question the artwork you see.
If you still aren’t convinced,
listen for the super cool sound effects!

Karina
I live in Brooklyn and go to high school
in Manhattan. I will be graduating this
year and hope to major in art history
when I attend college next fall. Although
art is not my only interest, I like
how it fosters communication among people
who do not see things eye to eye. Everyone
can appreciate art, whether or not they
consider themselves to be an artist.
Museums like MoMA that dare to present
ideas in a unique way really appeal
to me. MoMA looks at the world through
a visionary's perspective rather than
following the standard. Museums create
a direct relationship between the
artist and viewer, which is why there
is always an aura of connection and
inspiration.
Our podcast on Jasper Johns’s
Flag does not present the
same redundant information about the
artist and painting in a monotonous
voice, but rather, creates a connection
between visual art and poetry. We
thought such a presentation would
encourage the audience to think more
critically about the piece and truly
grasp the meaning of it. Hope you
enjoy it!

Masha
I am from Russia, where I moved from
two years ago, and currently live in
Washington Heights in uptown Manhattan.
In my free time I play handball, volleyball,
and rollerblade. I am really interested
in engineering and motorcycles.
I’m interested in art because
it is a way to express myself. I draw
if I am angry to kind of lead my anger
out. I draw when I am happy to picture
this moment so I can remember it later.
I believe that music, drawing, graffiti,
and anything that shows others some
point is art. |

Max
My name is Max. I’m from Morningside
Heights in Manhattan. I enjoy many
things, including reading, drawing,
watching movies, and exploring New
York. Um, yeah. That’s about
it.
I’m interested in art, because
to me, it is complete freedom. There
are no rules in art, unlike many other
things in life. I also like the fact
that art documents society for all
the generations to come. I’m
interested in museums because they
offer a chance to see all of this
documentation and freedom. I think
my podcast will be more relatable
and understandable than others, because
I’m me, not an art historian
or curator.

Melissa
I’m from the Bronx, and my
interests are mainly in the arts.
I love to draw, paint, and take photos.
Other than that I really like to read
and watch TV, like most teenagers,
I guess.
I’m interested in art and art
museums because they really “keep
me going.” Ever since I can
remember, creating art has been something
that I am really passionate about,
and I love learning about artists
as well.
The podcast is awesome!!! I don’t
think that anyone had much experience
in making podcasts, so we all worked
really hard. OOF was a really
cool painting to learn about and people
had some really interesting responses
to it. The painting was so different
from anything else that we saw in
the museum.

Michelle
My name is Michelle and I’m
from the Bronx. I’m interested
in writing and drawing.
I’m very interested in museums
and art. While growing up, I never
experienced anything outside of the
Bronx but I always enjoyed drawing.
Because I’m not a very good
artist, I thought of museums as a
way to enjoy art, history, and the
point of views of others. Museums
are also a good way to experience
New York.
Our podcast shows the ideas and thoughts
that people have when they walk into
a museum and look at an artwork. It
shows the ideas of ordinary people
who are experiencing the Museum just
like you.

Paloma
My name is Paloma Hedda Ines. It
is a mouthful to say and read, so
the majority of the people I know
don’t remember my middle names.
But I find them to be an important
part of who I am because they represent
my heritage, of both European and
Hispanic decent. I am most interested
in art and chemistry, mainly the conceptual
part of chemistry, not just plugging
numbers into given formulas.
One thing I find so beautiful about
art is that there is no language barrier.
On a given day, people from all over
the world come to see paintings, and
no matter what language they speak,
the paintings can still evoke the
same feelings and sensations. It’s
hard to communicate without words,
but art can and does.
What I find really interesting about
the podcast we have created is the
time period the art is from. When
you first look at a lot of the art
on the Museum’s fourth floor,
the meaning, or inspiration behind
it isn’t really obvious. There
are many green blocks or paintings
made out of a single color that don’t
initially make sense. The podcast
gives some context of the time the
art was created in. The podcast isn’t
meant to impose one opinion on the
listener, but offers a variety of
interpretations and thoughts that
art can inspire.

Patrick
I’m from the Bronx. I’m
in eleventh grade and am very interested
in the visual arts. I hope to become
a very successful businessman and that
includes success in art.
I’ve been interested in art
since I was in the fifth grade and
I used to trace and copy any type
of art that I liked at the time, which
was cartoon art or whatever was on
after school was out. The reason I
find myself interested in museums
is because I like to see what other
types of art are out there and I can
make mine better based on what I’ve
seen.
People should listen to our podcast
because it appeals to everyone that
is interested in art (and even if
you are not, it’s cool). I didn’t
even know what a podcast was until
I came into this program and went
through the process of making one.
Now I would love to hear a lot of
other podcasts about many different
things, not just art.
